This is a unique and fun twist on pizza. Think deep dish pizza with the crust on top. Think chicken pot pie with ground meat and tomato sauce instead of chicken and mushroom and green peas. The end result is a cheesy, meaty pie with the delicious crispy crust and pepperoni on top. Can’t. Go. Wrong.
I know this is not authentic Filipino but who cares? Everybody loves pizza. This is way better than ordering takeout or baking store-bought frozen pizza. You can tailor the vegetables to what you like and use as much or as little as you want.
Besides, it looks so good especially when you make it in one of these cast iron skillets. I borrowed the skillet from my son who also loves to cook. He was not happy about it and asked me to be extra careful. Maybe I should buy my own from the link below.
I got the idea from this recipe from an article online. The recipe was from delish.com. I changed it a little bit because they used Italian sausage and broccoli. I chose to use ground beef so I can season it myself and also used zucchini instead of broccoli.
A Bit Of History
We all know that pizza came from Italy. History says that in 1838, to honor the Queen consort of Italy, pizza margherita was created with cheese, basil and mozzarella. These colors were supposed to represent the national colors of Italy as seen on their flag.
In World War 2, Allied troops stationed in Italy tasted the pizza and the rest, as they say, is history.
Purists in Italy consider only two kinds of true pizzas – marinara and margherita. Marinara is a traditional food prepared by seamen’s wives (hence the term marinara) topped with oregano, tomato, garlic and extra virgin olive oil. Margherita, as mentioned above, is made of mozzarella, basil and tomato sauce.
To be fair, Greeks have been creating something similar since ancient times. Basically, all nations that eat flavored flatbread have created the basics of this food which we now enjoy.

Health Benefits of this Meal:
Tomatoes are high in lycopene which has been known to help with heart disease and cancer. Cooked tomatoes are especially high in lycopene and is recommended for guys for preventing prostate cancer.
Risk of pancreatic cancer is also said to be lowered by eating tomatoes. When combined with oils like avocado or olive oil, the body’s absorption of the nutrients can increase by 2 to 15 times.
Tomatoes with peels is better than unpeeled. If possible, buy tomato paste made with the peel included.
Zucchini has zero fats and lots of fiber. It is a good part of a weight loss diet. Zucchini has a lot of nutrients and anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps the heart and lowers blood pressure.
If you like eating salty foods, make zucchini a part of your diet as this vegetable counters the effects of too much sodium.
What do You Think?
This dish is very easy to make. The use of prepared pizza sauce and pizza crust dough makes it a quick and easy recipe. If you have the time and desire to make your own crust, you can do that as well. If you are on a low carb diet, google cauliflower crust, a trendy and healthy bread alternative.
The vegetables (bell pepper, mushroom and zucchini) are well hidden and this is why your kids will like it too. Making this reminded me of shepherd’s pie which is another dish I like. Maybe for next time.
I hope you enjoy this dish. Have a great week and stay healthy!
Here is a link to cast iron skillets similar to what I used. I am an affiliate marketer so I get a very small commission when you use this link but the price is the same for you. It keeps the lights on on this blog.
